BOBBY KARL WORKS THE ROOM May 17, 1999 - Chapter 122

Sometimes the best parties are the smallest ones. There were just three of us visiting in little Mexia, Texas for a video-taping session. We were there to document the memories, personality and extraordinary talent of Cindy Walker (4/17). Afterward she treated us to a homecooked fried-chicken-and-all-the-trimmings luncheon. Will Byrd, cameraman Bart Volpintesta and I were completely enthralled as the Country Music Hall of Famer played us her newest songs, and totally smitten when she offered to screen the Soundies she made in the 1940s.

These ancestors of music videos proved not only that she had the beauty and vocal ability to have been a major star, but so much comedic talent that she could have been Lucille Ball if she'd wanted to be. Lucky for the world of music, she chose to be a songwriter instead. Otherwise we wouldn't have "You Don't Know Me," "In the Misty Moonlight," "Cherokee Maiden," "Dream Baby (How Long Must I Dream)," "Blue Canadian Rockies," "I Don't Care," "Distant Drums," "Take Me In Your Arms and Hold Me," "Sugar Moon," "China Doll," "Anna Marie" and the rest of those breathtaking 1,000-plus masterpieces that have flowed from her for the past 50 years.

It was, as Will said, "one of the greatest Saturdays I've ever had in my life," because we also visited with the great and gracious Bill Mack ("Drinking Champagne," "Blue," "Clinging to a Saving Hand") in Ft. Worth and the legendary Floyd Tillman ("I Love You So Much It Hurts Me," "Slipping Around," "It Makes No Difference Now") in Marble Falls. Will was right. Cindy, if you ever see this, I just want you to know that the word "love" isn't enough to express how I feel about you.
